Buster Brown — 1905-09-24

Buster Brown's Mama Comes to the Farm follows the mischievous Buster, his dog Tige, and a cast of barnyard animals across ten panels. Buster rigs a donkey-cart stunt that goes predictably wrong, the farm animals stampede through the parlor where his mother sits, and the sequence closes with Buster receiving a spanking — then delivering his characteristic moralizing resolution directly to the reader. R. F. Outcault, who had already invented the modern Sunday comic page with *The Yellow Kid* (1895), drew *Buster Brown* from 1902 onward for the *New York Herald*. His fluid ink linework, crowd choreography, and integration of speech balloons into narrative action established conventions every subsequent cartoonist inherited.
