Buster Brown
· 17 December 1905

R. F. Outcault's Buster Brown ran in the *New York Herald* as a full-color Sunday page, and this Christmas installment shows the formula at full stretch: a series of numbered panels in which well-meaning adults present Buster with branded merchandise — china sets, books, games, a suit, a sled, stockings, a camera — while his bull terrier Tige reacts alongside him, culminating in a moral resolution written in Buster's own voice. Outcault had already invented the modern comic strip with *The Yellow Kid* (1895), pioneering the speech balloon and the recurring cast. Here his crisp cross-hatched line, strict panel grid, and product tie-in structure prefigure both the newspaper Sunday page as entertainment institution and the licensed character industry that would follow.
