Richard Outcault's *Buster Brown* ran in the New York Herald beginning in 1902, continuing a career that had already remade American popular culture with *The Yellow Kid*. This Christmas Sunday page follows Buster and his bull terrier Tige as he offers his sled to poor neighborhood children; the gift promptly becomes a runaway vehicle that sends an old man sprawling, triggers a brawl, and ends in a smashed sled beneath a tree. Outcault's twelve-panel grid, fluid ink linework, and closing 'Resolved' moral box were formal conventions he helped standardize — recurring character, speech balloon, sequential action — the direct structural ancestors of the comic book page.
