Buster Brown — 1906-10-28

Nine panels follow Buster, his dog Tige, and Uncle Charley through a Halloween apple-bobbing prank: Tige rolls a barrel to the house, adults and children crowd round a tub, and Buster secretly drops red dye in the water before Uncle Charley dunks his head — emerging crimson-faced and sputtering. The strip closes with Buster's signature *Resolved* moral, here a comic lecture on gravity and cash accounts. Outcault's clean line work, confident panel borders, and fluid speech-balloon placement represent the Sunday-page form at full maturity. His earlier *Yellow Kid* (1895) had helped establish the recurring-character strip; *Buster Brown*, launched 1902, refined its visual grammar into the template American newspaper comics would follow for decades.
