Richard F. Outcault's Buster Brown ran as a full-page Sunday color strip, here printed in black-and-white. Nine panels follow Buster's father donning a Santa Claus costume, bag of toys in tow, while Buster and his dog Tige scheme alongside him. The gag turns on children catching 'Santa' mid-deception, ending in Buster's customary moral 'Resolved' panel — his signature device, delivered straight to the reader. Outcault had already invented the modern speech balloon with *The Yellow Kid* (1895); here he deploys it with practiced economy, varying panel scale and crowd staging to sustain comic rhythm across the page. Sunday newspaper strips like this one, syndicated nationally, established the visual grammar — recurring cast, sequential panels, word-integrated imagery — that would directly produce the comic book format two decades later.
