Buster Brown

Richard Outcault's *Buster Brown* ran in the New York Herald beginning 1902, starring a mischief-making boy in a Little Lord Fauntleroy suit, his bulldog Tige, and a rotating cast of long-suffering adults. This New Year's Sunday page opens with a panoramic banner showing Buster and Tige racing toward 1908, then unfolds across two tiers: Buster attempts holiday calls on neighbors who slam doors in his face, dispatches a telegram, and finally gets ejected by a crowd of women. The strip closes, as every Sunday page did, with Buster's moralizing 'Resolved' speech—here riffing on New Year's customs. Outcault, who had already invented the Yellow Kid, perfected the recurring-character Sunday page and its grammar of sequential panels, integrated speech balloons, and a signature sign-off that readers expected weekly.
