The Captain and the Kids

R. Dirks's *Captain and the Kids* follows a ship's captain and his mischievous charges through slapstick adventures. This Sunday page demonstrates the visual conventions that defined early newspaper comics: sequential panels with speech balloons, recurring characters in predicable conflict, and sight gags built from physical comedy. Dirks's clean linework and dynamic compositions influenced how artists structured narrative across the page. Originally derived from *The Katzenjammer Kids*, the strip reached millions through syndication, making newspaper comics a mass medium and establishing the visual grammar that would define comic books.
