The Career of Cholly Cashcaller
· Early 1900s

This six-panel newspaper comic strip follows Cholly Cashcaller through romantic misadventures in an office setting. The narrative unfolds across sequential panels with dialogue balloons, establishing a continuous story arc: Cholly's initial courtship, his confident pitch to the woman, her rejection, his attempts to win her back, and final dismissal. The strip employs the visual vocabulary that defined early newspaper comics—panel borders, speech balloons, recurring character types, and expressive body language to convey action and emotion. Published in the golden age of Sunday and daily comic strips, this piece exemplifies how newspapers became the primary vehicle for developing the medium's artistic grammar before comic books emerged as a distinct format.
