The Career of Cholly Cashcaller
· Early 1900s

This comic strip follows Cholly Cashcaller through six sequential panels depicting his rise and fall as a newspaper columnist. The strip employs speech balloons, recurring character design, and a linear narrative arc—visual techniques that became foundational to comic storytelling. Each panel advances the plot chronologically, from initial success to editorial disappointment to financial ruin, culminating in his departure. The artist uses consistent line work and cross-hatching to convey emotion and circumstance. Sunday newspaper comics like this one established the formal vocabulary of the medium: panel borders, character continuity, and dialogue integration that would define American comics for decades to come.
