Gasoline Alley

Frank King's *Gasoline Alley* pioneered the Sunday comic strip format with multiple narrative panels and recurring characters anchored in everyday life. Here, Roscoe pursues Caddie while neighbors discuss romance, books, and domestic complications across nine panels. King's sequential art—distinct frames, speech balloons, and visual continuity—established visual techniques that became foundational to American comics. The strip ran in newspapers nationwide from 1918 onward, and King's innovations in panel layout and character development directly influenced the comic book form that emerged in the 1930s.
