The Changing World
This Sunday comic strip uses sequential panels and speech balloons to contrast past superstitions with modern American progress. The top panels depict indigenous peoples fearing a solar eclipse, then contemporary people worried about an apocalypse scheduled for December 17. Below, a ship carrying German toys gives way to American factories producing dolls and playthings domestically. The final two panels follow a woman's life: as a girl believing in Santa Claus, now as an adult wishing Santa still existed. The strip exemplifies early newspaper comics' use of visual repetition and character continuity across panels—formal innovations that shaped the medium's development from daily strips into collected comic books.
