Charlie Chaplin's Comic Capers: In Making the Bargain He Forgot Luke
This newspaper comic strip captures the visual language Chaplin's silent films had made famous—exaggerated posture, physical comedy, rapid scene changes. The six-panel layout, with speech balloons carrying plot and gag lines, follows the sequential narrative structure that newspaper strips pioneered in the 1890s and 1900s. Chaplin's tramp character, recognizable by his bowler hat and cane, moves through a bargaining scenario played for slapstick effect. Such strips, appearing in Sunday color supplements and weekday editions, served as direct predecessors to the comic books that would emerge in the 1930s, establishing the conventions of panel borders, dialogue placement, and recurring characters that became the medium's foundation.
