Circus Solly's Escape to the Sea
· August 6, 1905

This comic strip demonstrates the visual vocabulary that newspaper cartoonists developed in the early 1900s: sequential panels, speech balloons, and a recurring protagonist navigating slapstick situations. Circus Solly pursues an escape from urban pursuers toward the ocean, each panel advancing the narrative through physical comedy and visual gags. The strip exemplifies how Sunday newspaper comics emerged as a distinct medium, borrowing from earlier sequential art while establishing conventions—panel borders, dialogue placement, expressive line work—that would become foundational to comic books. Newspaper comic strips of this era functioned as both entertainment and technical laboratory for artists experimenting with how to tell stories through image and text in rapid succession.
