A Day of Rest and an Automobile Trip
This six-panel Sunday strip depicts a family outing gone awry as their motorcar breaks down repeatedly. The narrative unfolds across two tiers: the vehicle starts smoothly, then encounters mechanical failure, leading the occupants to abandon it and proceed on foot. The strip employs sequential panel layout with speech balloons to convey both dialogue and physical comedy—a visual vocabulary that emerged from newspaper Sunday pages in the early 1900s. Recurring characters and sight gags built reader loyalty, turning strips into daily fixtures. Such newspaper comics established the formal language of comics: bordered panels, word-image integration, and character-driven humor that would become foundational to the emerging comic book medium.
