The Dippy Dudes: On with the Dance
This Sunday newspaper strip demonstrates the visual vocabulary emerging in early comics: sequential panels, speech balloons, and recurring characters. Two gentlemen in formal dress navigate social mishaps across six frames—rejected dance invitations, physical comedy, and romantic entanglement. The artist employs exaggerated anatomy and slapstick action to drive the humor. Such strips populated the color Sunday supplements of major newspapers in the early 1900s, establishing narrative flow and character-driven gags that would become foundational to the comic book medium. The format—combining illustration, typography, and panel progression—directly enabled the comic books that followed.
