Dolby's Double

A Colonel Dolby encounters his exact double and arranges a duel to resolve the confusion. The strip unfolds across six panels using speech balloons and sequential action to advance the plot. Through misunderstandings and escalating threats, the two characters negotiate terms at Frog Hollow, complete with swordplay and physical comedy. The newspaper comic strip format—with recurring characters, panel transitions, and dialogue-driven humor—had by 1909 become the primary laboratory for visual storytelling. These Sunday and daily strips established the grammar later adopted by comic books: bordered panels, word balloons placed near speakers, and exaggerated physical expressions that conveyed emotion across silent sequences.
