Ella Cinders

This daily strip follows Ella, a working-class girl navigating domestic life and odd jobs. The four-panel sequence shows her dealing with a hand-me-down dress stained with grease—so filthy it warrants a trip to the soap factory. Conselman and Plumb use sequential panels and speech balloons to build comedic timing: Ella's problem in panel one, her explanation in panels two and three, and the punchline solution in the final frame. *Ella Cinders* exemplifies how newspaper comics of the 1920s employed repeating characters and simple visual storytelling to entertain daily readers. The strip's modest humor and resourceful heroine reflect working-girl themes popular in the era's comic pages.
