Fancies of the Fair
This Sunday comic strip deploys the visual conventions that defined early newspaper comics: multiple panels with speech balloons, sequential narrative, and recurring character types. The left panel presents an elaborate social scene at a fair; the right shows domestic leisure. The artist uses cross-hatching and detailed linework typical of the period's commercial illustration. By 1904, the Sunday newspaper page had become the primary venue for sequential narrative art in America, establishing the format and grammar—panel borders, word balloons, sight gags—that would structure the emerging comic book medium. Newspaper strips like this reached millions of readers daily and weekly, making them the true birthplace of American comics.
