The Adventures of Kitty Cobb
James Montgomery Flagg's serial strip follows Kitty Cobb through urban social situations rendered in expressive line work. This episode shows Kitty at a theater balcony, adopting fashionable mannerisms while ascending stairs—a visual gag about social performance and mimicry. Flagg employs the formal vocabulary emerging in early newspaper comics: sequential panels, varied figure poses, cross-hatching for depth, and incisive character studies. The strip exemplifies how newspaper serials of the 1910s pioneered recurring protagonists and episodic narrative, establishing the grammar that would define comic art. Flagg's careful draftsmanship and satirical eye toward contemporary leisure culture made such strips popular Sunday features, precursors to the comics pages that would eventually spawn the modern comic book industry.
