Flying to Fame: Tubby Plays a Hunch
This Sunday strip follows Tubby and his crew on a 1,000-mile flight from Havana to San Juan. The narrative unfolds across four panels using the visual grammar established by newspaper comics: sequential panels with speech balloons, recurring characters, and continuous action that rewards daily readership. The strip's economy of line and heavy cross-hatching typify the adventure comic style of the late 1920s. Flying stories were enormously popular in this era, capturing public fascination with aviation as both spectacle and modern achievement. The strip's format—installment narrative in the Sunday pages—became the direct ancestor of comic book storytelling, where panels and balloons migrated from newsprint to the new medium emerging in the 1930s.
