Freckles and His Friends
A four-panel Sunday strip featuring Freckles and his companions discovering a stranger in their neighborhood. The narrative unfolds across panels: children alert each other to the visitor's presence, speculate about his origins and nature, and debate whether to approach him. The strip demonstrates the visual grammar of newspaper comics—sequential panels, speech balloons, varied perspectives, and recurring child characters navigating everyday adventures. By the late 1920s, such strips occupied prime newspaper real estate, drawing millions of readers and establishing the formal vocabulary that would define American comic books.
