Freckles and His Friends
· August 11, 1928

This Sunday strip follows young Freckles and his uncle through comic misadventures involving seasickness and ocean travel. The four-panel layout uses speech balloons and sequential staging to build humor across scenes, a visual method pioneered by newspaper cartoonists in the 1920s. Recurring boy characters and domestic settings anchor the strip's appeal to family newspaper readers. The thick inking and figure work typify the period's comic illustration style, before the arrival of specialized comic books made these newspaper pages the primary venue for sequential art in America.
