Freckles and His Friends
· September 25, 1928

A Sunday strip by Bud Blosser featuring young Freckles and a zebra—likely a circus or zoo visit that sets up the comic premise. The strip uses the full visual vocabulary of newspaper comics: multiple panels showing sequential action, speech balloons advancing the gag, and a cast of recurring child characters. By the late 1920s, strips like this appeared in Sunday editions across America, establishing the formal grammar—panel borders, close-ups, sight gags—that would define the medium. Newspaper comics of this era were the primary mass-produced sequential art, read by millions daily and weekly, directly prefiguring the comic book format that would emerge in the 1930s.
