Freckles and His Friends

Merrill Blosser's *Freckles and His Friends* ran as a daily and Sunday strip from 1915 to 1974, following a freckled boy and his circle through school adventures and misadventures. This strip exemplifies the narrative comics that appeared in newspapers nationwide—long-form storytelling in panel sequences with speech balloons, recurring casts, and visual gags. The Sunday format permitted larger illustrated scenes and multi-panel layouts that influenced comic book page design. By the 1920s, newspaper strips had become the primary laboratory for sequential art technique: panel borders, motion lines, facial expression codes, and dialogue integration all developed here before the comic book industry emerged in the mid-1930s.
