Freckles and His Friends

A Sunday strip following young Freckles and his companions on a treasure hunt. The narrative unfolds across four panels: the boys debate their expedition plan, discuss provisioning for a two-thousand-mile journey, spot what appears to be a wrecked ship on a beach, and discover an enormous diamond. The strip employs the visual conventions established in newspaper comics—sequential panels, speech balloons, and recurring characters—that formed the visual grammar later adopted by comic books. Freckles was syndicated widely during the 1920s-1930s, representing the adventure-strip tradition that dominated the Sunday pages before superheroes emerged.
