Freckles and His Friends
· May 25, 1929

This Sunday comic strip episode traces a missing-person crisis through six panels of escalating accusation and blame. Tagalong Freckles has vanished near a train station, prompting Nan to suspect Van of negligence. Van deflects to the Potter, who blames his own method of supervision. The drama climaxes when Freckles' mother assumes full guilt—only to learn that Dan the cowboy will track down the runaway. The strip employs the visual vocabulary of newspaper comics: sequential panels, expressive character silhouettes, speech balloons advancing plot and personality. Recurring kid-and-adult casts populated American dailies and Sundays from the 1920s forward, establishing narrative rhythm and emotional stakes that would define the medium.
