Freckles and His Friends

A Sunday newspaper comic strip featuring Freckles, a young boy with prominent freckles, and his circle of friends. The strip follows a typical gag structure across four panels: a setup (Freckles attends a football game where a coach named "Nutty Cook" has achieved four touchdowns in ten minutes), escalation (Freckles asks for an autograph as a souvenir), complications (the coach refuses to sign people's names, only objects, warning his eyebrows will need "raising" when his mask comes off), and payoff (a girl's exclamation of "Freckles!" reveals the punchline). The artwork employs the visual conventions established in 1920s–30s newspaper comics: panel borders, speech balloons with tails, action lines, and expressive character faces. Such strips were the direct precursors to the modern comic book format.
