The Carnival
This Sunday strip depicts a classic carnival con: a carny's scheme to sell dynamite by posting a fake weight-limit sign on a pony ride. The humor unfolds across three tiers—a visual progression inherited from newspaper comics' early visual grammar. Speech balloons carry exposition and punchlines; silhouettes and spotlit figures create emphasis. The strip's recurring cast of boy characters—Freckles and friends—anchors reader interest across dailies and Sundays, a formula that made newspaper comics the mass medium that directly preceded the comic book. Published in 1935, the strip exemplifies the syndicated humor comic that dominated American papers and established the panel-and-dialogue structure foundational to all subsequent graphic narrative.
