Freckles and His Friends
This comic strip demonstrates the visual language that newspaper comics inherited and refined from earlier strips. The four-panel sequence uses speech balloons, expressive line work, and sequential action to build a joke around courtroom chaos. Mrs. Weezel's literal interpretation of legal procedure—sliding across the bench and bringing her pet into the courthouse—sets up the judge's mounting exasperation and ultimate threat of contempt charges. The strip's economy of line and reliance on character recognition across daily installments exemplifies how newspaper comics functioned as serialized visual storytelling, establishing conventions of panel layout, dialogue placement, and recurring figures that would become foundational to the emerging comic book format.
