Freckles and His Friends

M. Errill Blosser's daily strip about a resourceful boy and his gang ran from 1915 to 1955, appearing in hundreds of newspapers. The two strips shown here demonstrate the format's essential tools: sequential panels with speech balloons advancing a narrative, recurring characters with distinct personalities, and visual gags that reward close reading. The left strip involves a borrowed car and parental authority; the right, a police encounter.
