Gabe by Frueh

Artist Frueh employs the visual conventions now standard to comics: sequential panels, speech balloons, and recurring characters in varied situations. The strip exemplifies early 1910s humor strips that ran in Sunday papers, where simple gags and physical comedy drove narrative forward across expanding page layouts. These strips, distributed nationally by syndicates, established the visual grammar later adopted by comic books themselves.
