Goat and the Ganders

This early newspaper comic strip demonstrates the visual conventions that became fundamental to the medium: sequential panels, speech balloons, and recurring animal characters in slapstick situations. The strip follows a goat through a series of escalating misadventures with military figures and other characters, using the animal protagonist as a vehicle for physical comedy. The loose, expressive linework and composition reflect the style of early-twentieth-century newspaper illustration, when the Sunday funny pages were establishing themselves as a distinct form distinct from both fine art and political cartooning. Such strips, distributed widely through newspaper syndication, formed the visual and narrative grammar that would define comic books when they emerged as a collected medium in the 1930s.
