Grimes's Goat
· November 5, 1911

A Sunday comic strip by Steinigans following a man's attempts to manage a troublesome goat, which wreaks havoc wherever it appears. The narrative unfolds across six panels arranged in a grid, employing speech balloons and sequential art to track the escalating chaos—from the goat's initial appearance to its destruction of storefronts and merchandise. The strip exemplifies the visual conventions that emerged in early-twentieth-century newspaper comics: panel borders containing discrete moments, readable type advancing the plot, and exaggerated physical comedy. The recurring protagonist and his nemesis animal establish a formula that would become standard in American comic strips, where character interaction and situational humor drive continuity across installments.
