Grimes's Goat
A Sunday newspaper comic strip by Steinigans following the domestic chaos caused by a mischievous goat loose in an urban home. The narrative unfolds across six panels using sequential art conventions—speech balloons, action lines, and varied perspectives—that were still being refined during comics' emergence from the Sunday funnies. The strip employs slapstick humor typical of the era: a woman's encounter with the goat escalates from polite bewilderment through physical comedy to neighborhood bedlam. The densely cross-hatched drawing style and reliance on exaggerated body language reflect how newspaper cartoonists of the 1910s communicated gags to mass audiences, establishing visual storytelling methods that would become fundamental to the developing medium of comic books.
