Grimes's Goat
A Sunday newspaper comic strip following the misadventures of a mischievous goat and its human handlers. The narrative unfolds across eight panels in a grid layout, employing sequential art conventions—speech balloons, varied panel sizes, and dynamic figure postures—that were rapidly standardizing in early-twentieth-century strips. The goat's anarchic behavior drives physical comedy: it butts a cart, tramples its keeper, and creates havoc among sailors. The strip exemplifies how newspapers serialized comic narratives with recurring characters, establishing the visual grammar that would become foundational to comic books. Dynamic linework and exaggerated poses convey action and humor across the page, demonstrating the expressive possibilities of the medium.
