Grimes's Goat
*Grimes's Goat* follows a mischievous animal pulling a cart through urban and rural scenes, driven by children and adults in chaotic pursuit. The strip employs sequential panels with speech balloons and sound effects to depict slapstick action across multiple tiers. Each panel advances a single narrative: the goat escapes, crashes, or causes mayhem while characters react in exaggerated poses. The advertising banner ("Get Grimes's Goat and win clothing") anchors the strip as a promotional vehicle for Blue Front Clothing. By 1912, Sunday newspaper comics had become the dominant form of visual storytelling in America, establishing conventions—recurring characters, panel borders, dialogue balloons—that would structure the emerging comic book medium. Artists like those behind *Grimes's Goat* codified the visual grammar that transformed sequential art into a distinct narrative form.
