Grimes's Goat
A Sunday newspaper comic strip featuring a recurring character—a mischievous goat—and the chaos it creates. The strip demonstrates the visual vocabulary that became standard in comics: sequential panels progressing left to right, speech balloons carrying dialogue, and exaggerated character expressions. The humor relies on physical comedy and sight gags common to early twentieth-century newspaper strips. Created during the golden age of the Sunday funny pages, when newspapers competed for readers through installment comics featuring familiar characters and situations. This period saw artists developing the panel-based grammar and narrative conventions that would form the foundation of the comic book medium.
