H. E. Butzin—Is Put Out in the First Inning
· April 12, 1908

This Sunday comic strip follows H. E. Butzin's attempt to play baseball, a popular subject in early newspaper comics. The strip employs the standard visual vocabulary of the period: sequential panels, speech balloons, and exaggerated character expressions to convey action and comedy. A recurring protagonist navigates domestic friction and public embarrassment across multiple scenes, moving from domestic space to the baseball field and back. The style and layout reflect the conventions of newspaper Sunday pages, which by 1908 had established the foundational grammar of comic art—panel borders, visual narrative progression, and word-image integration that would define the emerging medium.
