The Hall-Room Boys
This newspaper comic strip follows two working-class roommates navigating urban life through schemes and misadventures. The six-panel layout uses speech balloons and sequential art to tell a complete joke—here, the boys attempt to impress an uncle by posing as wealthy. The strip's visual economy of line work and reliance on repeated characters appeared in Sunday supplements across America in the early 1900s. Such strips, distributed through syndication, established the narrative conventions—panel progression, dialogue integration, recurring protagonists—that would become foundational to comic books. The Hall-Room Boys exemplifies how newspaper comics functioned as daily serialized entertainment and proved the commercial viability of sequential visual storytelling.
