Harold Teen

A Sunday strip by Carl Ed following Harold Teen, an ordinary high school student navigating romance, school life, and small-town affairs. This example shows Harold discussing finances with Goofy Gibbs—a comic sidekick whose malapropisms and physical comedy drive the gags. The six-panel layout uses sequential art conventions established in the 1920s: recurring characters, speech balloons, varied panel sizes, and visual continuity across frames. Harold Teen ran daily and Sunday from 1921 through the 1960s, establishing the teen-focused comedy strip as a newspaper staple. Ed's accessible cartooning and relatable teenage protagonist influenced the form's development during the early newspaper comic era.
