The strip employs sequential art conventions—panel borders, speech balloons, and visual progression—that were foundational to comic strip language. By the 1920s, newspaper strips like Harold Teen had become laboratories for visual storytelling, with recurring characters and episodic humor driving daily and Sunday readership across American papers.
