Hawkshaw the Detective
· May 14, 1916

A Sunday newspaper comic strip featuring the mustachioed detective Hawkshaw pursuing criminals and solving mysteries. The strip employs the visual conventions that defined early comic art: sequential panels arranged in rows, speech balloons advancing plot and character, exaggerated expressions and physical comedy. Hawkshaw's gang of suspects tumbles across the page in chase sequences rendered through dynamic linework and detailed cross-hatching. The narrative unfolds through pictures and words together—neither sufficient alone—establishing the grammar that would define the comic book medium. Newspaper strips like this one, syndicated nationally and appearing daily or on Sundays, trained readers in panel-to-panel storytelling and created recurring characters whose exploits could extend indefinitely, founding the visual and commercial foundations of American comics.
