Sherlocko: The Great Lighthouse Mystery
This three-panel Sunday strip by Gus Mager depicts a comedic detective mystery aboard a lighthouse. The protagonist and his companion debate whether hiding a gun in a shark cove will help solve the case, with absurdist logic driving the gags. Mager employs the visual conventions established by newspaper comics: sequential panels advancing a narrative, speech balloons revealing character voice, and exaggerated expressions conveying emotion. The strip's humor relies on non sequiturs and physical comedy typical of 1920s Sunday pages. Newspaper comics of this era functioned as the direct precursor to the comic book format, establishing the panel-based visual language and character-driven storytelling that would define the medium for decades.
