Heroes of the Week
· 1924

A Sunday comic strip page featuring four separate gags tied by a theme: Percy Poultis spends his baseball afternoon buying a hat; Frederic Flounce disrupts a board meeting; Hank Hangover buys a used car and embarks on a cross-country tour; and a final panel shows a character at a speed trap. The strip uses the visual conventions established by newspaper comics: multiple panels with speech balloons, recurring character types, and sight gags tied to urban life and mishaps. Each vignette stands alone yet shares the page's comedic sensibility—topical humor about automobiles, meetings, and social climbing. By the 1920s, such Sunday pages had become the primary venue where comic art developed its grammar: panel sequencing, word-image integration, and character-driven humor that would define the medium for decades.
