Herr Spiegleburger: Such a Smoker Vat He Ain't
· July 2, 1905

This Sunday comic strip follows the misadventures of Herr Spiegleburger, a rotund character caught between his wife's domestic demands and his fondness for cigars. Across six panels, the narrative unfolds through sequential art: Spiegleburger attempts to hide his smoking habit, is discovered by family members, and faces escalating consequences. The strip employs the visual vocabulary that defined early newspaper comics—multiple rectangular panels advancing the story, speech balloons carrying dialogue, and exaggerated character expressions for comedic effect. Published during the formative years of comic strips in American newspapers, this work exemplifies how artists of the era developed the grammatical structures—panel borders, word balloons, and visual pacing—that would become foundational to the comic book medium.
