How Do They Do It?
This Sunday comic strip uses six sequential panels to trace the commercial path of art from studio to sale. The narrative follows a painter's philosophy—that simplicity defines artistic merit—through a series of increasingly absurd scenarios: young artists studying in the field, a struggling painter negotiating with a dealer for just a dollar, and finally, a wealthy collector's purchase of the same work for $1,000. The final panel expands to a cityscape vista, revealing the small painting now dominates an urban skyline. The strip employs the visual conventions that had become standard in newspaper comics: speech balloons, consistent character design, panel borders directing eye movement, and escalating comic logic. These techniques, developed across decades of Sunday supplements and daily strips, established the visual language that would define the emerging comic book form.
