How Do They Do It?
· April 4, 1917

This six-panel comic strip follows a husky man's attempt to land a movie role as a leading man. Through a sequence of rejections—deemed insufficiently "different," too weak, and unable to fit the part—the strip charts the absurd logic of early Hollywood casting. The final panel delivers the punchline: the man succeeds by accidentally crashing through a building while skateboarding, proving that authentic spectacle trumps deliberate performance. The strip exemplifies the visual economy developed in newspaper comics: sequential panels with speech balloons, exaggerated caricature, and escalating gags that resolve in physical comedy. Such strips, syndicated across Sunday pages and dailies, established the vocabulary later adopted by comic books.
