How Do They Do It?
· April 16, 1917

This Sunday newspaper strip showcases the visual vocabulary that defined early comic storytelling: sequential panels, speech balloons, and recurring character types arranged to guide the reader's eye across the page. The strip follows a baseball manager and his young players through spring training, using sight gags and verbal humor typical of sports comics. Each panel isolates a moment in time, while dialogue reveals character voice and plot development. The crude but energetic linework captures movement and emotion essential to the medium's rapid growth during the 1910s, when newspaper comic sections became the primary vehicle for developing both the technical language and commercial viability of sequential art.
