How Do They Do It?
This comic strip follows a small man in a checkered suit through six panels as he attempts to collect payment from a debtor. The gag escalates from civil conversation to physical comedy: the debtor refuses, grows indignant at the intrusion, and eventually the collector finds himself chased and knocked down. The strip's visual language—sequential panels, speech balloons, expressive character poses—typifies early newspaper comics that established the medium's basic grammar. Published in the Sunday pages during the golden age of newspaper strips, such recurring character types and predicament-driven humor formed the foundation for comic book storytelling, influencing decades of sequential art and visual narrative.
