Hugo Hercules
This Sunday strip follows Hugo Hercules through a comedic crisis: a fire engine breaks down, and only Hugo can save the day. The four-panel sequence demonstrates early comic narrative technique—speech balloons carrying dialogue and exposition, sequential panels advancing plot, and a recurring strongman protagonist. The strip exemplifies the newspaper Sunday pages that preceded the comic book, where artists developed visual conventions still used today. Hugo's exaggerated musculature and the casual integration of dialogue balloons show how newspaper comics refined the grammar of sequential art, moving beyond single illustrated gags to tell stories through panel progression.
